The Age of Innocence is adapted from an American novel of the same title written by Edith Wharton. Newland Archer (Daniel Day-Lewis) is a lawyer of New York at 1870's. He is engaged to beautiful May Welland (Winona Ryder) who obeys society customs perfectly. After the arrival of Countess Ellen Olenska (Michelle Pfeiffer), May's cousin, Newland begins to question his love and customs of his society. Ellen separated herself from her abusive husband at Europe and returned to New York. Her free spirit allows Newland to see beyond the narrow society they live in, and they fall in love with each other. For her family's reputation and her cousin May's love, Ellen forces Newland to marry May. After six months of May and Newland's marriage, Newland meets Ellen again. But Ellen abruptly leaves New York and returns to Europe. To know the reason of Ellen's sudden decision on leaving Newland and their love behind, watch the movie.
